Vita



David Brenner currently directs the Houston Teachers Institute at the University of Houston, where he also serves as a visiting assistant professor of German Studies and Comparative Literature in The Honors College. He is the author of two books, "Marketing Identities: The Invention of Jewish Ethnicity" (Wayne State University Press, 1998) and "German-Jewish Popular Culture before the Holocaust" (Routledge, 2008). His translation of Niklas Luhmann’s "Religion der Gesellschaft" will appear in 2011 with Stanford University Press. Currently, he is completing a translation of Elisabeth Bronfen’s "Tiefer als der Tag gedacht. Eine Kulturgeschichte der Nacht" for Columbia University Press (scheduled 2011). Among other things, he has translated excerpts of non-fiction for Litrix.de and poetry for Dimension2.





Auszeichnungen



My first translation grant was from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1984. Since then, I have received grants and fellowships from the Fulbright, Mellon and Humboldt Foundations as well as from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Library Association, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and others. I am most proud of my “Texas Excellence” Teaching Award (1st Place), University of Texas at Austin, College of Liberal Arts, Graduate Student Category, in 1993.
